In a surprising move, Indonesia has banned the sale and use of the Apple iPhone 16 across the country. The country’s Industry Minister, Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita has declared that the iPhone 16 inside the country will be considered illegal.
According to the Industry minister, “If you’re using an iPhone 16 in Indonesia, it means the device is illegal”. He urged the citizens to report any such instances that come to their notice. He also emphasizes the seriousness of the ban by warning potential buyers about the consequences of importing the device from abroad.
During his visit to Jakarta, company CEO Tim Cook reportedly discussed plans to set up manufacturing units in Indonesia with President Joko Widodo. Apple had promised to invest 1.71 trillion Rupiah in the country, but it has only invested about 1.48 trillion Rupiah (around $95 million), leaving a deficit of approximately 230 billion Rupiah ($14.75 million).
This has triggered the government to take action against the company. The ban is a consequence of Apple not meeting its investment commitments in Indonesia.
The minister stated earlier that the iPhone 16 could not be sold in Indonesia due to the lack of TKDN certification, which mandates that 40 per cent of the components needed for the product should be sourced locally. This certification is important for the company as it is required to establish the “Apple Academy” in Indonesia, its research and development facility.
The sudden move has stirred confusion among locals and tourists who own an iPhone 16. Travelers with iPhone 16, who have already booked their flights to Indonesia are advised to keep a backup device to ensure that they stay connected during the visit.
